ABOUT NOEL
Noel is a seasoned football coach with over four decades of experience spanning top-tier college programs and the NFL Renowned for his innovative offensive strategies and player development skills, Mazzone has left a significant mark on every team he’s coached.
Playing Career
He played college football as a quarterback at the University of New Mexico from 1975 to 1979, leading the Lobos in passing during the 1976 and 1977 seasons.
Early Coaching Roles (1980–2005)
- University of New Mexico (1980–1981): Began as a graduate assistant under head coach Joe Morrison.
- Colorado State University (1982–1986): Coached quarterbacks and receivers, mentoring future NFL quarterback Kelly Stouffer.
- Texas Christian University (1987–1991): Served as quarterbacks coach.
- University of Minnesota (1992–1994): Held the position of quarterbacks coach.
- University of Mississippi (1995–1998): Appointed offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under head coach Tommy Tuberville.
- Auburn University (1999–2001): Continued as offensive coordinator with Tuberville.
- Oregon State University (2002): Served as offensive coordinator under head coach Dennis Erickson.
- North Carolina State University (2003–2004): Offensive coordinator and tight ends coach, coaching quarterback Philip Rivers, who became the fourth overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft.
NFL Coaching Experience
- New York Jets (2006–2008): Wide receivers coach under head coach Eric Mangini.
- New York Jets (2009): Served as a personnel consultant for the franchise.
UCLA Bruins (2012–2015)
Mazzone joined UCLA as offensive coordinator in 2012, implementing a high-scoring offense that set multiple school records:
- 2012 Season: Senior running back Johnathan Franklin set school records for career rushing yards (4,403) and single-season rushing yards (1,734). Quarterback Brett Hundley set records for single-season passing yards (3,740) and total offense (4,095).
- 2013 Season: The Bruins set a school record for total offense with 692 yards against New Mexico State.
- 2014 Season: Hundley became UCLA’s all-time leader in total offense (11,713 yards) and touchdown passes (75). Running back Paul Perkins led the Pac-12 in rushing with 1,575 yards, the second-highest in school history.
- 2015 Season: UCLA set a school record with six games of over 500 yards of total offense. Freshman quarterback Josh Rosen was named Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year.
Texas A&M Aggies (2016–2017)
In 2016, Mazzone became the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Texas A&M:
- 2016 Season: The Aggies averaged over 200 rushing and 200 passing yards per game, totaling 467.1 yards per game, ranking second in the SEC.
- 2017 Season: Texas A&M’s passing offense ranked third in the SEC with 252.2 yards per game.
University of Arizona (2018–2020)
Mazzone served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Arizona, continuing his role under head coach Kevin Sumlin.
